Joe, a resident of Newport News for 75 years, retired from civil service following 31 years of service. He served as a staff sergeant in World War II, with the Army Air Force. Joe was a 'man of his word' and fervently believed in God, family and country. Competitive by nature, he was an athlete in his earlier years, which later extended to golf and gardening. He believed in supporting his community and was active in numerous civic activities.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia Leigh Russell; and two sons, Edward Joseph Corbett and wife, Jan of Hampton, and William Hobert Corbett and wife, Amy of Yorktown. He is also survived by four grandsons, Ryan Corbett of Hampton, Reid Corbett of Newport News, Brent Corbett and Patrick Corbett both of Yorktown; and brother, William Frederick Corbett also of Newport News.

• He was buried at the Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery in Newport News, Virginia in 2008.
