• He worked as a gold mining 1849 to 1851 in California. 1 "... in 1849, at the height of the gold excitement, he went overland to California, where he spent two years prospecting and mining."

• He worked as a sea captain after 1851. 1 "After his return to the East he followed a seafaring life for about twenty years, engaging in the coast trade between New Bedford and nearby ports, going to Philidelphia for coal, and in the winter months running to the West Indies. He was master of the schooner "Adelaide" and the "Henriatta," and of the brig "Ormers," of which he was part owner."
