SUFFOLK - Joseph Ray Ward Sr., 85, died Jan. 7, 2007, at Sentara Obici Hospital. Born July 8, 1921, in Gates County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Asbell and McCoy Sherald Ward and widower of Frances Darden Ward. He was predeceased by his sisters, Lilly Butler, Latilda Dougherty, Nell Knight and his brother, Sherald Ward. Mr. Ward was a retired farmer and a member of Great Fork Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was past master of McAllister Masonic Lodge No. 185, past chairman and board member of ASCS, past president of the Nansemond County Farm Bureau and former member of the Suffolk Shrine Club. Mr. Ward was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Ward is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, R. Darden and Lynn Bennett Ward and Joseph Ray Ward Jr., all of Suffolk; grandchildren, Jennifer Elizabeth Ward and Hayden Bennett Ward; sister, Ellen Faircloth and her husband of Suffolk; numerous nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Great Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Donald Ray Jones with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.
